Behnam Samani, der in Köln lebende renommierte iranische Percussionist mit internationaler Bühnen- und Workshoperfahrung, hat dieses Festival ins Leben gerufen. Internationale Meister ihres Fachs aus Italien, Iran, Afghanistan, Syrien und Tadschikistan werden viele verschiedene Facetten der Percussion-Kunst in Workshops und Konzerten an drei Tagen präsentieren.

Behnam Samani, the renowned Iranian percussionist with international stage and workshop experience, living in Cologne, brought this festival to life. International masters of their craft from Italy, Iran, Afghanistan, Syria and Tajikistan will present many different facets of the art of percussion in workshops and concerts over three days.

KONZERTE

Die Meister-Dozenten der Workshops und hochkarätige Gastmusiker werden in verschiedenen Besetzungen spielen. Kern der Konzerte ist das Zarbang Ensemble, von Behnam Samani u.a. gegründet, das am ersten Konzerttag mit der Tänzerin Katerina La Greca und im zweiten Konzert mit Markus Stockhausen spielt. Jarvid Afsari Rad, auch Mitglied im Zarbang Ensemble, performt zusätzlich mit seinen Musikern des JAR-Ensembles aus Norwegen. Wir sind sehr erfreut über die Teilnahme von Ustad Ghulam Hussian, Ghulam Nejrawi und Khayrullo Dadoboev, die den Kreis der Meister dieses Jahr erweitern!

The master lecturers of the workshops and top-class guest musicians will play in different line-ups. The core of the concerts is the Zarbang Ensemble, founded by Behnam Samani and others, which plays with the dancer Katerina La Greca on the first concert day and with Markus Stockhausen in the second concert. Jarvid Afsari Rad, also a member of the Zarbang Ensemble, also performs with his musicians from the JAR Ensemble from Norway. We are especially happy about the participation of Ustad Ghulam Hussian, Ghulam Nejrawi and Khayrullo Dadoboev, who expand the circle of masters this year!

DIE KÜNSTLER / The artists

Behnam Samani (Deutschland/Köln, Iran –  Künstlerische Leitung und Instrumente Tombak, Daf) ist der Gründer des Perkussionsensembles Zarbang. Er studierte 13 Jahre lang Tombak bei dem großen Tombakmeister Jamshid Mohebbi in Isfahan und später bei anderen Perkussionsmeistern in Teheran.Behnam hat mit einigen der berühmtesten iranischen Musiker zusammengearbeitet, darunter Faramarz Payvar, Houshang Zarif, Rahmatollah Badiei, Hossein Alizadeh und Kayhan Kalhor. Darüber hinaus unternahm er weltweit ausgedehnte Tourneen, bei denen er mit vielen angesehenen internationalen Musikern zusammenarbeitete und auf renommierten Festivals und in Konzertsälen in Europa, den USA, Nord- und Südamerika, Afrika, dem Nahen Osten und China auftrat. Tief verwurzelt in den Rhythmen der klassischen Musik, des Sufi-Klosters und der regionalen Volksmusik des Irans und deren Perkussionstechniken, spiegelt Behnams Stil, insbesondere auf der Tombak, eine harmonische Mischung aus westlichen und weiter gefassten östlichen Einflüssen wider. Zur Zeit lebt er in Köln und spielt im Zarbang Ensemble.
An seinen Percussion-Workshops nehmen Interessierte aus ganz Europa teil.

Artistic direction and instruments Tombak, Daf) is the founder of the percussion ensemble Zarbang. He studied tombac for 13 years with the great tombac master Jamshid Mohebbi in Isfahan and later with other percussion masters in Tehran. Behnam has worked with some of Iran's most famous musicians including Faramarz Payvar, Houshang Zarif, Rahmatollah Badiei, Hossein Alizadeh and Kayhan Kalhor. He has also embarked on extensive tours around the world, collaborating with many distinguished international musicians and performing at prestigious festivals and concert halls in Europe, the United States, North and South America, Africa, the Middle East and China. Deeply rooted in the rhythms of classical, Sufi monastic and regional Iranian folk music and their percussion techniques, Behnam's style, particularly on the tombak, reflects a harmonious blend of Western and broader Eastern influences. He currently lives in Cologne and plays in the Zarbang Ensemble. Interested parties from all over Europe take part in his percussion workshops.



Hakim Ludin (Afghanistan – Rahmentrommel & Cajon) lernte klassische Tablas bei Meister Sufi Lahli in Afghanistan, bevor er seine professionelle Karriere mit einer klassischen Ausbildung an der Musikhochschule in Karlsruhe begann. Die Konstellation seiner perkussiven Instrumente, die sensible Art, wie er sie spielt, und seine virtuosen Solobeiträge akzentuieren Kompositionen mit magischen Klängen und Rhythmen, die bunte musikalische Bilder malen. Hakim hat als Studiomusiker für Film und Fernsehen gearbeitet. Er tourte und spielte mit internationalen Jazzgrößen wie Jonas Hellborg, Jeff Hamilton, Alex Acuna, Lenny Castro, Steve Smith, Luis Conte, Peter Maffay, Christoph Spendel, Naoki Kenji, F. Zappas Schlagzeuger Terry Bozzio sowie Sänger Konstantin Wecker. Er ist Gastdozent an der Berner Musikhochschule und an der Kunstakademie Betzigau. Internationale Drumcamps laden ihn als Percussion-Dozent regelmäßig ein: Teheran, Montreal, Luxemburg, Warschau, Dresden, Karlsruhe, Paderborn. Seine Arbeit ist u.a. mit einem Jazzpreis ausgezeichnet.

The constellation of his percussive instruments, the sensitive way he plays them and his virtuoso solo contributions accentuate compositions with magical sounds and rhythms that paint colorful musical images. Hakim has worked as a studio musician for film and television. He has toured and played with international jazz greats such as Jonas Hellborg, Jeff Hamilton, Alex Acuna, Lenny Castro, Steve Smith, Luis Conte, Peter Maffay, Christoph Spendel, Naoki Kenji, F. Zappas drummer Terry Bozzio and singer Konstantin Wecker. He is a guest lecturer at the Bern University of Music and at the Art Academy in Betzigau. International drum camps regularly invite him to teach percussion: Tehran, Montreal, Luxembourg, Warsaw, Dresden, Karlsruhe, Paderborn. His work has been awarded a jazz prize, among others.



Markus Stockhausen (Deutschland/Köln, Trompete) ist als Trompetensolist, Improvisator und Komponist im Jazz genauso zuhause wie in der zeitgenössischen und der klassischen Musik und zählt zu den vielseitigsten Musikern unserer Zeit.
1957 in Köln geboren, begann er im Alter von sechs Jahren mit dem Klavierspiel. Ab 1975 studierte er an der Musikhochschule Köln Klavier und Trompete. Ein Jahr vor seinem Konzertexamen errang er 1981 den Preis des Deutschen Musikwettbewerbs. Seitdem konzertierte er regelmäßig als Solist – darunter bei zahlreichen Uraufführungen, wie bei dem für ihn im Jahre 2002 komponierten Trompetenkonzert Jet Stream von Peter Eötvös mit dem BBC Symphony Orchestra in London – und ist immer wieder zu Gast bei renommierten internationalen Musikfestivals.
Er arbeitete 25 Jahre lang intensiv zusammen mit seinem Vater, dem Komponisten Karlheinz Stockhausen, der zahlreiche Werke für ihn schrieb. Als Solist stand er u.a. in dessen großen musikdramatischen Werken aus LICHT auf den Bühnen der Mailänder Scala, der Londener Oper Covent Garden und der Oper Leipzig. Viele CDs im Stockhausen-Verlag dokumentieren diese Zusammenarbeit.

is just as at home as a trumpet soloist, improviser and composer in jazz as in contemporary and classical music and is one of the most versatile musicians of our time.
Born in Cologne in 1957, he began playing the piano at the age of six. From 1975 he studied piano and trumpet at the music academy in Cologne. In 1981, a year before his concert exam, he won the prize of the German Music Competition. Since then he has given concerts regularly as a soloist - including numerous world premieres, such as the trumpet concerto Jet Stream by Peter Eötvös composed for him in 2002 with the BBC Symphony Orchestra in London - and is a frequent guest at renowned international music festivals.
For 25 years he worked intensively with his father, the composer Karlheinz Stockhausen, who wrote numerous works for him. As a soloist, he has appeared in his major musico-dramatic works from LICHT on the stages of La Scala in Milan, the London Opera Covent Garden and the Leipzig Opera. Many CDs in the Stockhausen publishing house document this collaboration.


Luca Rossi ist ein italienischer Perkussionist, Autor undAutor und Performer, er ist der bekanntesten Tammorra- und Tamburello-Spieler Italiens.Er hat sich auf die Techniken und Stile der Rahmentrommeln spezialisiert, die zum Mittelmeerraum gehören. Er studierte Ethnomusikologie an der Fakultät für Musik und darstellende Kunst in Bologna. Er ist in der italienischen Popmusikszene und in der internationalen ethnischen Musik zu Hause.
Luca Rossi nimmt an verschiedenen nationalen und internationalen Festivals für ethnische Musik teil, wie dem Festival Decouvertèes Tunisie (Tunesien El Jem), dem Festival Internacional de Chiclana (Spanien), dem Festival von Patras (Griechenland), dem Festival des Mittelmeers (Italien), dem More Dance Project (Litauen), dem Europe Day Concert (Armenien), dem Festival der italienischen Kultur in Sofia (Bulgarien), Italian Thailand Festival (Bangkok), Drumming Holiday (Österreich) außerdem spielt er in vielen renommierten Clubs, Theatern und im italienischen Fernsehen.

Luca Rossi is an Italian percussionist, author andperformer for the popular theater and folk music of South Italy, one of the best known tammorra and tamburello player in Italy.He is specializing in the techniques and styles of frame drums which belong to the Mediterranean. He studied in ethnomusicology at the Department of Music and Performing Arts in Bologna. He has performed in Italian popular music scene and international ethnic music.Luca takes part in various festivals of ethnic music both nationally and internationally such as Festival Decouvertèes Tunisie (Tunisia El Jem), Festival Internacional de Chiclana (Spain), Festival of Patras (Greece), Festival of the Mediterranean (Italy), More Dance Project (Lithuania), Europe Day Concert (Armenia), Festival of Italian culturein Sofia (Bulgaria), Italian Thailand Festival (Bangkok), Drumming Holiday (Austria), and in many prestigious clubs, theaters, auditoriums and Italian television



Javid Afsari Rad (Santur, Komposition)
spielt eine Reihe von Instrumenten, hauptsächlich jedoch Santur. Er studierte klassische persische Musik, ist Komponist und künstlerischer Leiter der Ensembles ComboNations, Rumi Ensemble (Javid Afsari Rad Ensemble) und Norwegian World Orchestra. Seine Kompositionen sind inspiriert von der persischen, indischen und arabischen Musiktradition, aber auch von westeuropäischer Klassischer Musik, die er in Norwegen studierte. Javid konzertiert weltweit mit seinen Ensembles.

He studied classical Persian music, is a composer and artistic director of the ensembles ComboNations, Rumi Ensemble (Javid Afsari Rad Ensemble) and Norwegian World Orchestra. Ustad Gholam Hussein
Der große afghanische Meister Ustad Gholam Hussein hat sich das Spielen der Rubab Laute spezialisiert. Geboren in Kabul innerhalb einer Musiklinie, wurde er von Ustad Mohammad Omar ausgebildet, bevorer seinerseits ein anerkannter Instrumentalist wurde, der für sein subtiles Spiel geschätzt wird.

The great Afghan master Ustad Gholam Hussein specialized in playing the rubab lute. Born in Kabul within a musical lineage, he was trained by Ustad Mohammad Omar before becoming an accomplished instrumentalist in his own right, valued for his subtle playing.



Gholam Nejrawi
wurde von seinem Vater, dem großen Zerbagali Meister Malang, ausgebildet. Er engagiert sich zusammen mit Gholam Hussein in der Vermittlung afghanischer Repertoires in Europa, wo beide sich inzwischen einen Namen gemacht haben.

was trained by his father, the great Zerbagali master Malang. Together with Gholam Hussein, he is involved in promoting Afghan repertoires in Europe, where both have now made a name for themselves.



Reza Samani (Iran – Tombak, Daf)
Mit namhaften Musikern wie Rahmatollah Badii, Hossein Alizadeh, Keyhan Kalhor, Alireza Ghorbani, Salar Aghili und Konstantin Wecker arbeitete Reza Samani bei internationalen Projekten. Zahlreiche Konzertreisen brachten ihn als Solokünstler und als Mitglied der Ensembles ZARBANG in die USA, nach Kanada, Asien, Afrika und in verschiedene Länder Europas.  Er lebt in Köln, unterrichtet in verschiedenen Städten Deutschlands und in anderen europäischen Ländern Tombak, Daf, Udu und Rahmentrommeln und veranstaltet regelmäßig erfolgreiche Workshops.

Khayrullo Dadoboev
wurde 1978 in Chudschand (Tadschikistan) geboren. Bereits seit seiner frühen Kindheit spielt er auf der tadschikischen Rahmentrommel „Doyra“ (Daira), die ihm sein Vater Fayzullo Dadoboev, ebenfalls ein bekannter Doyra-Spieler in Tadschikistan, in die Hand gab.
Er begann mit 20 Jahren seine professionelle Musikerlaufbahn. Sein virtuoses Spiel auf der Doyra führte ihn seitdem auf Festivals und Konzerte in Deutschland, den Niederlanden, Frankreich, Indien, China, Kuweit, Oman, Dubai, Katar, Russland, die Ukraine, Kasachstan, Kirgistan, Usbekistan und Aserbaidschan. Seit 1998 unterrichtet Khayrullo Dadoboev Kinder und Jugendliche und leitet heute die sowohl in Tadschikistan, als auch darüber hinaus bekannte Gruppe von Doyra-Spielern „Khayrullo Dadoboev“. Über 10 Jahre lang war er musikalischer Leiter des populären Ensembles „Sadoi Chudschand“, ein gemischtes Ensemble von traditionellen Blasinstrumenten und Perkussion.

was born in 1978 in Khujand (Tajikistan). Since his early childhood he has been playing the Tajik frame drum "Doyra" (Daira), which his father Fayzullo Dadoboev, also a well-known doyra player in Tajikistan, gave him in his hand.
He began his professional career as a musician at the age of 20. Since then, his virtuoso playing on the doyra has taken him to festivals and concerts in Germany, the Netherlands, France, India, China, Kuwait, Oman, Dubai, Qatar, Russia, the Ukraine, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Uzbekistan and Azerbaijan. Khayrullo Dadoboev has been teaching children and young people since 1998 and today leads the group of Doyra players "Khayrullo Dadoboev", which is well-known both in Tajikistan and beyond. For more than 10 years he was the musical director of the popular ensemble "Sadoi Khujand", a mixed ensemble of traditional wind instruments and percussion.


Shadi Al Housh (Syrien – Darabuka & Riq)
spielt seit 23 Jahren besondereenste arabische Perkussioninstrumente (Darabuka, Riq, Duff).  In Syrien wirkte er als Berufsmusiker in verschiedenen Orchestern und tourte durch vielfältige Länder der Golfregion und Afrika.  Shadi arbeitet seit 2015 in Deutschland, er spielte zusammen mit diversen interkulturellen Musikgruppen und dem Heeresmusikkorps Koblenz, gibt Workshops und ist Dozent an der Landesmusikakademie NRW.

In Syria he worked as a professional musician in various orchestras and toured through various countries in the Gulf region and Africa. Shadi has been working in Germany since 2015, he played with various intercultural music groups and the Koblenz Army Music Corps, gives workshops and is a lecturer at the State Music Academy of North Rhine-Westphalia.



Syavash Rastani (Tombak)
Syavash Rastani ist ein Perkussionist mit iranischen Wurzeln, der in Köln lebt. Mit sieben Jahren begann er bei Mohammad Hashemi († 2007) die traditionelle Spielweise der kelchförmigen ‚Tonbak‘ zu lernen. Dieses Studium setzte er mit Perkussions-Meister Behnam Samani fort. Seine traditionellen persischen Trommeln, wie die ‚Tonbak‘ und die Rahmentrommel ‚Daf‘ setzt er in musikgenre-übergreifenden Formationen ein. Mit dem ‚Armaos/Rastani Duo‘ gewann er 2017 den Weltmusik Wettbewerb ‚Creole‘ auf Bundesebene. Seit 2014 veranstaltet er einmal jährlich die Konzertreihe ‚SYA LIVE‘, bei der er bislang mit 53 Künstlern aus 19 verschiedenen Nationen zusammengearbeitet hat.

Syavash Rastani is a percussionist with Iranian roots living in Cologne. At the age of seven he began to learn the traditional way of playing the goblet-shaped 'tonbak' with Mohammad Hashemi († 2007). He continued this study with percussion master Behnam Samani. He uses his traditional Persian drums, such as the 'Tonbak' and the frame drum 'Daf', in formations that span music genres. With the 'Armaos/Rastani Duo' he won the world music competition 'Creole' at national level in 2017. Since 2014 he has been organizing the annual concert series 'SYA LIVE', in which he has worked with 53 artists from 19 different nations.
